The Good Citizen: An Introduction to S.L. and Crimean YEG-GA

The extraordinary rock for this carving was found in and around the environs of Kinbasket Lake, British Columbia in late Summer 2014, just when the Salmon finish their life cycle journey towards the origins of the Fraser River. The natural fissures and fractures were readily retained by the School of One carver as a reminder that supposed “imperfections” are a means of securing and appreciating unique character and celebrating difference. This also explains why this carving is dedicated to the individual historical agency, accomplishments and contributions of daughters born in the Crimea, past, present and future. Meanwhile, the name of the carving, Crimean YEG-GA, also draws direct inspiration from a research project undertaken by S.L. in which she traced the contentious history surrounding the Black Sea port Sevastopol from its origins during the rule of Catherine the Great through the time when it was shared by both the Ukrainian and Russian fleets.

S.L. and Crimean began their travels together in January 2016. The School of One Carver learned that S.L. and her family are naturalized Canadian citizens who immigrated from the city of Novorossiysk, Russia in 2002. She further noted that she has both Ukrainian and Russian multicultural ancestry. The first vignette found below confirms how S.L. and her family are extremely dedicated to their new country while retaining their own cultural heritage, hence explaining why they celebrate follow the festive calendars from both countries. She further outlined how this has also meant celebrating "three Christmases". S.L., now a Psychology student, wishes to pursue a career path in law enforement, either with major urban police force or the Royal Canadian Mountain Police.

Patriotic Historical Sight Envisioned: Canada Day Festivities Recreated, 2016

Today, I'm back to normal after an eventful national holiday in Canada. Sadly, my SD card broke on me during the long weekend so I tried to recreate my favorite photo and historical moments of the past Canada Day. Hence, these three portraits are not the same as our actual festivities since they lack the delicious food as well as the dear friends and treasured family members who were found around the table. Now, everything and everyone only linger in my fond memories suggested in the patterns of digital light defining the background to Crimean YEG-GA's patriotic stage. For my family, the holiday is used to celebrate both our ethnicity and our Canadian nationality, as well as to recognize and remember that the two forms of identity coexist.
