Collaborative Journeys: The Travels of Humorous Pensive-e and T.F.E.

This carving is part of the Pensive-e series developed by the School of One Carver during the early months of 2016, when Rossdale was still cloaked in snow and frosty weather. When gently nudged in either direction, the carving will spin and “wobble”. Meanwhile, the engineering of the carving is derived from a comparative reading of pre-Columbian American, Eurasian and Asian insights into the “spiraling” movement of wind, water and light. Humorous Pensive-e marshals some familiar original designs developed by the School of One, such as the "stretched cosmic egg” defining the overall shape of the piece as well as the carving's variation of the School of One motif called the “face of light.” The rock for this carving was quarried from the Eastern edge of the Pacific Rim, just below Terry Fox’s “Mile Zero “ during a huge gale in November, 2015. The piece draws direct inspiration from the sense of humour maintained by people from Saskatchewan, especially those individuals who are enrolled in Native Studies at the University of Alberta. The carving is dedicated to the individual historical agency, accomplishments and contributions of fathers, elders and ancestors from the Sunchild First Nation. “Humourous Pensive-e” was given to T.F.E. in late Spring 2016 by the School of One in recognition of T.F.E.’s deep-seated commitment to the integration and promotion Indigenous knowledge within the university and K-12 curriculum in Canada. As seen in the following collaborative vignettes, T.F.E. and Pensive-e's extensive Western travels included a trip to the Pacific Ocean where it seems that Humorous Pensive-e was, indeed, also "back again".

Back Again: Feet to Ground, Sunchild First Nation

Humorous Pensive-e at Sunchild First Nation

Here we are on April 26, 2016, at the Sunchild First Nation, located about fifty kilometres West of Rocky Mountain House, Alberta. This picture was taken at approximately 7:55PM, just as the sun was on the verge of setting, outside of my mother's house where I grew up. I was getting ready to set out for my evening jog, one of the many activities that I enjoy doing while spending time at my home nation. Everything seems simple and peaceful here at home and it is a place where I can turn to when in need. On this night the weather was calm and all of the natural Spring energy could be appreciated and embraced. T.F.E.

Back Again: Feet to Ocean Water, Stanley Park

Humorous Pensive e Vancouver Travel Account

This picture was taken on May 22, 2016, at approximately 7:39PM on the edge of Stanley Park, Vancouver, British Columbia. The weather at the time was calm and warm as Spring weather can be. This picture was taken to capture the Pacific Ocean coastline and the nature that the area has to offer, as can be seen behind Humorous Pensive-e. The trip was the second time I had been to the West Coast, but it was the first time I dipped my feet in the ocean water. T.F.E.

Back Again: Mount Robson Alpine Reflection, 2017

Pensive e New Year 2017.jpeg

This day was a good day in the mountains. I always appreciate my presence in the mountains because, during the academic year, I am unable to visit them as often as I would like. This particular location marked here is by the Mount Robson resort in British Columbia. In the background of the carving the scenery can be greatly appreciated, and the extraordinary natural surroundings also help explain why this specific mountain is one of my personal favourites. The photo was taken at approximately 3:28P.M. on February 19, 2017, a quiet Sunday. The weather was warm for the Winter Season, and the Sun was shining brightly, which made this day much more special and worthwhile.

Back Again: Long Island Lake road Trip, 2017

Pensive e Visits Long Island Lake

This photo was taken on June, 9, 2017 at approximately 7:32PM at Long Island Lake, located in Caribou central-interior B.C. At the time of the photo the weather was quite warm and the day was winding down. I was also winding down from a road trip in support of a relation of mine. I appreciated this drive because it was undertaken taken just before the final week of the Spring semester at the University of Alberta. The road tends to have its ways of clearing up the mind and bringing one into focus for what is needed and what is important. Also, the carving is a great companion to have when traveling.
